Experiment Title Effect of different forms of gypsum and wheat crop residue incorporation on rice - wheat cropping system in coastal salt affected soil
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background Rice-wheat cropping system is a widely adopted cropping system in India as well as in coastal areas. The wide scale adoption of this cropping system has increased the agriculture production, but this intensive system over a period of time and nature of crops has set both declining yield and deterioration in soil productivity even with optimum use of fertilizers. In India, many farmers are adopted rice straw burning practice for effectively removes large volumes of biomass and helps control weeds and a variety of pests and diseases. However, some disadvantages of burning are nutrient loss, depletion of soil organic matter and reduction in the presence of beneficial soil biota. In coastal salt affected soil, use of gypsum along with crop residue plays important role in maintaining soil physical condition as well as raising productivity of rice-wheat cropping system. Hence, present study is to be planned.
