Experiment Title | Evaluation of fungicides against the sheath rot of rice
Research Type | AICRP Research
Experiment Background | Rice is major staple food crop grown in 112 countries of the world. The total area of the world under harvested rice is 167.24 million hectares producing 500 million tonnes of grains in 2020 (Anon., 2020). In India rice is cultivated on 43.19 million hectares with an annual production of 117.47 million tonnes and annual yield 2550 kg/ha (Anon., 2019). In Gujarat rice is cultivated on 0.84 million hectares with an annual production of 1.93 million tonnes and annual yield of 2306 kg/ha in 2016-2017 (Anon., 2020). The yield potential of rice in the state is low as compared to the national average which is attributed to a number of biotic factors. Severe outbreaks of sheath rot causing considerable yield losses were reported in India and South Asia. In India, Chakravarty and Biswas (1978) reported yield losses of 10-26 per cent (average estimate of 14%) due to this disease. In severe cases, 100 per cent seed sterility and no panicle emergence were observed (Raina and Singh 1980, Kang and Rattan 1983, Pearce et al., 2001, Sakthivel, 2001 and Prasad et al., 2012) Sheath rot disease reduces the yield by 3-20 % (Chen and Chien, 1964) 10-35 % (Singh and Devi, 1999) and 3-85 % (Reddy, 1991). The sheath rot has been prevailing in South Gujarat since 1985 and increasing day by day. In some years it causes major quantitative and qualitative losses.
