Experiment code 24
Experiment Title Effect of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash on rabi sweet corn (Zea mays L. var. saccharata Sturt)
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the important cereal crops occupying a prominent position in global agriculture. In India, it is grown in 8.7 million hectares with an annual production of 21.6 million tonnes. Sweet corn (Zea mays L. saccharata) are also known as sugar corn is a hybridized variety of maize (Zea mays L.) specially bred to increase the sugar content. The quality of sweet corn depends on the type of gene involved for sweetness. Maize is responsive to applied nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potash either organic or inorganic sources and requires regulated and assured supply of nutrients particularly nitrogen throughout the growing period. In view of these, the present experiment is proposed with the following objectives.

Objective

(1) To study the effect of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash levels on growth, yield and quality of sweet corn

(2) To evaluate the nutrient content and uptake by sweet corn as influenced by  nitrogen, phosphorus and potash levels

(3) To work out the economics of different treatments
