Experiment Title
|
Induction of salt tolerance in rice by mutagenesis |
Research Type
|
State Trial |
Experiment Background
|
The global extent of salt-affected lands is considerable. Moreover, the expanded salinity area is expected to be more because of climate change and water shortage. The predominant constraint in rice production is soil salinity in the coastal belts of South Gujarat. To overcome the salinity problem, different strategies such as reclamation, drainage and water control, are under investigation. Breeding for salt tolerance of rice varieties seems to be one of the most promising solutions for utilizing such soils. Exploitation of salt tolerant rice varieties had been in progress, but those rice varieties were generally low yielding. Salt affected lands provide avenues for testing rice genotypes for tolerance to salinity. As a consequence, sustained and profitable production of crops on salt-affected soil is only possible by evolving the salt tolerant varieties, which possess high yield, early maturity and other desirable characteristics through the use of induced mutation. Induced mutations have been utilized for the creation of genetic variability for the selection of mutant varieties with improved agronomic traits. |

Treatment
|
Seeds of varieties Dandi and GNR-3 were irradiated with five doses of gamma rays viz., 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 Gy in Gamma Cell (Cobalt-60 source emitting 3600 rads per minute) at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Trombay, Mumbai. (Five hundred seeds per dose).
Generation advancement was carried out from M1 (2016) to currently M7 (2022) to select the best mutant lines for salt tolerance based on individual plants.
The performance of the selected promising mutants after confirming stability will be evaluated for yield and yield components along with their parents and
check varieties under saline conditions.
