Experiment Title Trade performance of Wood Products of India
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background Wood based industry is the fastest growing industry in India. The rapid growth in urbanization and increasing housing construction there is huge demand for wood and wood products. To meet these demand different wood products imported in India. The export of total wood products from India is 0.40% of total production, though India is importing 7107 thousand m3 wood products. This indicates the huge demand of wood products in India. The export quantity and value of different wood products from India is less than the import which showed negative balance of trade for wood products. As wood based industry is one of the most important part of economy, the interest has be increasing to know the status and growth in trade of wood product over the period of time which may fruitful in taking future decisions in relation to production and trade of wood products.

Research Methodology

Methodology

Data collection:

  • The present investigation will be carried by collecting the secondary data on quantity and value of export and import of different wood products of India from the statistical database given on the official website of International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO)for the period from 1990 to 2021.
  • The different wood products  includes the coniferous and non coniferous Industrial round wood, swan wood, veneer, plywood and cane and bamboo.

Analysis of data

  • To study the growth in quantity and value of export and import of wood products Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) will be estimated by fitting the exponential trend equation.
  • To study the instability in in quantity and value of export and import of wood products Cuddy and Della Velle Instability Index (CDVI) will be  used.
  • To measure comparative advantage in export of specific commodity Revealed Comparative Advantage Index(RCA) formulated by Balassa (1965)will be estimated.
  • To study comparative advantage in Import of specific commodity Relative Import Advantage Index (RMA) will be worked out.
  • However RCA having the limitation of asymmetry, therefore to make RCA symmetric the another method was suggested by Dalumet.al (1998) called as Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage  (RSCA) will be used.
  • To study the trade specialization of specific wood product in India the Lafay Index (LFI) will be worked out.
