Experiment Title Integrated weed management in sugarcane planted through single eye budded settling under south Gujarat condition
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background Sugarcane is one of the most important industrial cash crops in both tropical and subtropical regions of the world and a major export product of many developing countries. Autumn sugarcane remains in the field for a year or more and wider space between sugarcane rows and initial slow growth provide ample chance for profuse weed growth which draws a huge amount of nutrients and moisture from the soil and compete for light with young planted settlings and thus reduce the cane yields. sugarcane generally suffers from tremendous weed problems. Uncontrolled weeds may cause 12 - 72% cane yield reduction. weed management is most effective to control weeds. However, higher cost involvement and lack of labour availability in proper time make it difficult to adopt by the farmers. On the other hand, only the application of herbicide is not proved so effective method. Similarly, alternative herbicides should be tested to minimize the chances of weed resurgence against commonly used herbicides having the same mode of action. Therefore, there is a need to develop the most effective and economical weed control practices for obtaining maximum yield as well as profitability. Therefore, To find appropriate weed management for sugarcane planting through single eye budded settling this experiment is proposed.
