Experiment Title

Estimation of 305 day milk yield from cumulative monthly and bimonthly test day records in Surti Buffalo |
Research Type
|
Departmental Research |
Experiment Background
|
The main need in evaluating the productivity of dairy buffaloes is the existence of milk yield data during one lactation period. In some countries that have advanced in the dairy industries like New Zealand, Australia and Canada, donations of recording program is large enough. For developing countries, alternatives are needed since facilities supporting the recording programs are lack. The alternative to replace daily records for selection purposes can be done based on a weekly, biweekly, monthly, or bimonthly records.
Previous studies showed the various methods that can be used to estimate complete milk production, including Test Day Models (Mrode, 2002; Khazaei, 2008 & Kokate, 2014) and extending part lactation. Test Day Records (TD) is a 24-hour total milk production record taken on certain test days only (Swalve, 2000). The former method requires TD for 1 lactation period (± 10 months). In fact, early estimates may be useful in a more efficient selection process. The later method requires a sum of daily record yield during some months of lactation. Compared to the former method, the later method can predict milk yield earlier, but daily yield is more difficult to be recorded than monthly. To further simplify and overcome the weaknesses of both methods, the experiment will be conducted using monthly and bimonthly test day records on part lactation. Therefore, this study is expected to provide an appropriate estimation formula especially for small holder farming. The aims of this study is to estimate 305 day milk yield (dMY) of Surti buffaloes from cumulative monthly and bimonthly test day records and to analyze its accuracy. |

Research Methodology
|
Data Collection Tools & Techniques: Data will be collected from Livestock Research Station, NAU, Navsari.
➢ Statistical Tools for analyzing data: Simple linear regression and correlation.
Method used to estimate 305-d milk yield in this experiment will be a simple linear regression analysis with one independent variable, i.e. cumulative test day yield. The two cumulative monthly data will be obtained by summing the first and second monthly test day milk yields (MTDY), as well as for the following cumulative months (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9). The two cumulative bimonthly data will be obtained by summing the first and second bimonthly test day milk yields (BTDY), as well as for the following cumulative months.
Cumulative MTDY = 1st TD + 2nd TD + 3rd TD + ... + ith TD
Cumulative BTDY = 2nd TD + 4th TD + 6th TD + ... + ith TD
