Experiment Title Perception of farmers about Natural Farming in South Gujarat
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background Agriculture is an important sector in Indian economy. It provides livelihood to the nearly 60 percent of the population. Sustainable development of agriculture is vital for not only prosperity of the country but food security of millions of people of India, also. Green revolution technologies made the India self sufficient in term of food grain and others agro-based raw materials for industries. However, excessive and haphazard use of agro-chemicals such as fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides and natural resources such as land, water, cause land degradation, depletion in groundwater which ultimately causes the reduction in agricultural productivity. Also, use of high cost inputs adversely affected the profitability in agriculture. Consequently, a large number of farmers falling into the debt trap, and distress in farming sector became pervasive. In due course, organic farming started gaining importance. The demand for organic food products is on constant rise worldwide but it has some limitations. Though, very high price of organic food products vis-a-vis conventional food makes it inaccessible to low-income population. On the other hand, the need for a large quantity of FYM/organic fertilizers and costly certification processes makes it impossible for small farmers to adopt it. Alternate way for making agriculture sustainable, eco-friendly and economical is the natural farming. Natural Farming (NF) is considered to be agroecology based diversified farming system, which integrates crops, trees and livestock, allowing functional biodiversity to drastically cut down production costs by replacing the chemical fertilisers and pesticides with home-grown products. There is need to promote the natural farming among the farming community for adoption. Convicting the farmers to adopt there is needs to propagate knowledge, develop skills and moulds the attitude of the farmers about natural farming. Before implementing any natural faming promotional programme it is necessary to know what farmers perceive the natural farming. Considering this in it is imperative to study “Perception of farmers about Natural Farming in South Gujarat” .
