Experiment code 17.4.3.32
Experiment Title Response of planting density on dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus L.)
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background Currently, the total cultivated area of dragon fruit in Gujarat was approximately below 100 ha in 2018. dragon fruit is a fast growing crop under Gujarat weather condition and fruiting within a year after planting. The information of agronomic practices on dragon fruit planting is still unavailable for the growers to improve their fruit yield and productivity. The planting of dragon fruit was mainly depends on the vertical structure support, where the concrete pillar are normally been used as the trellis in dragon fruit planting. The planting distances of these trellises are basically recommended between 2.0m to 3.0m among the trellises. In Gujarat, the planting distance of dragon fruit varying from 3.0m x 3.0m to 3.0m x 2.1m. Based on observation, the branches canopy size of dragon fruit are smaller than 2.0m in diameter. Farmers were adopted different spacing by trial and error method. There is very less research work on planting density. Therefore, an experiment was conducted on high density planting of dragon fruit to study the effect on growth, flowering, fruiting, yield and quality of dragon fruit planting under south Gujarat weather condition.
