Evaluation of Tannia [Xanthosoma sagittifolium (L.)] genotypes under south Gujarat condition
Research Type
Departmental Trail
Experiment Background
Tannia is an important tuber crop of aroid group and is grown extensively in West Bengal, Bihar, U.P., Kerala, Gujarat etc. in India as well as abroad (Africa, US, Puerto Rico, Philippines). In Gujarat, tannia crop is mainly grown for leaf purpose. Availability of tannia leaves is throughout the year in Gujarat as it can be grown throughout the year. In Gujarat and some parts of Maharashtra it is mainly used for making “Paatra”, a value added product. It is also used to make the subji of “Turiya-patra” in marriage season. The leaves also can be used as vegetable after boiling just like spinach. Though, it is cultivated in large area as an inter crop in fruit orchards/other crops/sole crop in South Gujarat and as a sole crop/mix crop with other vegetables in middle Gujarat, the farmers are cultivating Local germplasm. Considering the fact above experiment has been framed to find out the best suited genotype for south Gujarat region.
