Experiment Title
|
Efficacy of polymer based Super absorbent on Bt. Cotton hybrid under rainfed condition |
Research Type
|
Departmental Trail |
Experiment Background
|
Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is one of the most important fiber-producing plants. The cultivation of cotton has high economic value and is important in rainfed areas where it represents a significant source of income for large number of farmers. Water availability is one of the major limiting factors of cotton productivity. Reduced availability of water resources in many area, particularly in response to the indiscriminate harvesting of water reservoirs and climate change, has created real concerns.
Gujarat ranks first in cotton production occupying nearly 24% cropped area of Gujarat, cotton contributes nearly 1/3 to the State Gross Agricultural Product. In the last 10 years, > 500 Bt Cotton hybrids notified for commercial cultivation in central zone. Bt cotton area has grown by >85% in last ten years in Gujarat state. About 65 % area of cotton is still under rainfed cultivation in the state. So many measures have to be adopted for conservation of soil moisture in the area for obtaining higher yield of the crop. The soil application of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) may increase water use efficiency, improve soil physical properties and crop growth and yield and reduce the irrigation requirements of crops.
Rate and time of superabsorbent polymers application is required to be finalized for Bt cotton hybrids grown under rainfed condition of Gujarat State is required. Therefore, this experiment is proposed to be conducted at MCRS, NAU, Surat under Rainfed condition.
