| Experiment Background | Sapota (Manilkara zapota), known as sapodilla or chiku, is one of the prominent fruit species belonging to the family Sapotaceae. Sapodilla is grown on a commercial basis in India, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mexico, Venezuela, Guatemala, and some other Central American countries. Sapota starts bearing early from second or third year of planting but economical yields can be obtained from seventh year onwards. Under tropical conditions, flowers are seen almost throughout the year. In Gujarat, south Gujarat is hub for sapota. Few varieties/hybrids are in sapota, of which one or two were the dominant for sapota in south Gujarat region. So there is an urgent need to develop some good hybrids to give higher yield and better quality against dominant one and only Kalipatti variety. So looking to the need of our region, the hybridization work will be started using following objective. | ||
