Experiment code 19.5.3.32
Experiment Title Influence of leveling and irrigation scheduling on Turmeric crop in black soil of south Gujarat
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background The third most important spice crop grown in India is turmeric, since ancient times and also India enjoys monopoly in the production of turmeric. The area and production are 294542 ha and 1101920 MT during 2020-21. The major turmeric producing states in India are Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal, Mizoram, Assam and Gujrat. During the year 2021-22, The area, production and productivity of turmeric in Gujarat were 4949 ha, 95989 MT and 19.40 MT/ha, respectively. The Navsari, Dahod, Aravalli and Amreli district are reported highest area and production of turmeric in South, Middle, North and Saurastra-Kutch region of Gujarat respectively. In Navsari District, area, production and productivity of turmeric were 966 ha, 19194 MT and 19.87 MT/ha, respectively. The highest Productivity of turmeric is 22.20 Mt/ha recorded in Dang district. In India as well as Gujarat, the production of turmeric crop is very low as compared to its potential. The cause behind this is the mismanagement of crop management practices and irrigation scheduling which are the major factor for affecting the growth and production of turmeric.
