Experiment Title | Biology of lac insect, Kerria lacca (Kerr) on Flemingia semialata Roxb.
Research Type | Departmental Research
Experiment Background | Lac is one of the most valuable gifts of nature and only resin of animal origin secreted by a tiny scale insect, Kerria lacca (Kerr.). There are basically two strains of lac insects throughout India which are commonly known as Kusmi and Rangeeni. Among them,Kusmi is better than strain Rangeeni due to its light colour. It can be reared on kusum (Schleichera oleosa (Lour.) Oken), Flemingia semialata Roxb. And ber (Ziziphus mauritiana Lam.) etc. The Kusmi completes two life cycles per year each having six months duration viz., Aghani (winter season crop) and Jethwi (summer season crop). The lac insect yields three useful materials viz., resin, dye and wax. In India the lac is cultivated by the adoption of quick growing lac hosts which have low gestation period such as Flemingia semialata and F. macrophylla. Both host plants emerged as potential lac hosts in the country and were widely grown for lac cultivation. These hosts are highly suitable for the production of good quality of kusmi lac under irrigated conditions. In Gujarat lac insect is naturally found in abundance on its natural hosts viz., pipal (Ficus religiosa Linn.), palas (B. monosperma), ber (Z. mauritiana), babool (Vachellia nilotica L.) and other trees in forest area, indicating that agro climatic condition of the region is well suited for its survival and abundance of lac insect. In forest areas, this natural resin is traditionally collected by the tribals and rural for various uses but its commercial cultivation is not in practice due to lack of knowledge about the biology and host preference of lac insect which hindered the development of commercial lac production in Gujarat. A complete knowledge of the life cycle of lac insects in Gujarat will bring about an impetus to lac cultivation in the area.
