Experiment code 13.4.3.20
Experiment Title Effect of heading back and pruning on growth and yield of high density planting orchard of mango cv. Kesar.
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background South Gujarat is known as a hub of mango. The crop is cultivated from long back. There are so many old orchards of Kesar mango which exist at least 30 to 40 years. The productivity of such orchards is very low. Heavy pruning of such trees is a well known practice to rejuvenate them and by such to increase the productivity. Keeping this in mind the experiment is proposed for the benefit of farmers who have very old orchard of Kesar.

Treatment

Main plot treatments (heading back)
M1
3 ft. from ground level
M2
5 ft. from ground level
M3
7 ft. from ground level
Sub plot treatments (Pruning length)
S1
Pruning of newly emerged shoot from 10 cm.
S2
Pruning of newly emerged shoot from 20 cm.
S3
Pruning of newly emerged shoot from 30 cm.
Note: Recommended dose of fertilizer was applied as per the recommendation. 4 to 6 newly emerged shoots will maintain on each headed back branch/trunk. Heading back will do after cessation of monsoon (Oct-Nov).
