Experiment Title Effect of weather parameters on flowering and fruiting of HDP mango under South Gujarat condition.
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background The mango (Mangifera indica L.) is the most popular among the tropical fruits and considered one of the oldest cultivated tree in the world. It is recognized as one of the best fruits in the world market and no one will have a difference of opinion about the status given to mango as “King of Fruits”, owing to its captivating flavour, excellent taste, attractive fragrance, irresistible sweetness and beautiful shades of colour both inside and outside the fruit. Mango is andromonoecious and the plant bears both staminate and perfect flowers on same panicle. The distribution pattern, intensity of both types of flowers varies with cultivar, bloom time and environmental factors. Mango is most vulnerable against climate change. However, various cultivars of mango showing different behaviour with weather parameters. So far, little work has been done on the floral biology and flower sex ratio of mango in India with respect to the variation in the time of panicle emergence. Consequently, the problem has assumed great significance due to the changed climate scenario leading to lower productivity. Irregular rainfall, reduced low temperature durations have changed the flowering flushes in mango. Many varieties are showing staggered flowering due to these climate aberrations. Therefore it is essential to understand the influence of flowering time on the flower sex ratio and also to identify cultivars which show reduced variability in sex ratio with respect to the time of flowering in order to get uniform fruit set and yield. In the present study an attempt has been made to correlate the flower sex ratio with the temperature at the flower bud morphogenesis stage, with panicle size and fruit set in mango.

1. Mango will be exposed to natural fallen climatic conditions for the effective period 2. Evaluation of mango for flowering behavior, and fruiting behavior 3. Cutoff date for flowering will be considered as 1st November 4. Pollen viability (%) will be recorded at 9 a.m. 5. Heat unit like growing degree days (GDD), heliothermal unit (HTU) and photothermal unit (PTU) were computed by using the methodology as described by Nuttonson (1955).
