Experiment Title
|
Assessment of Post Harvest Loss of Papaya on Farmers Income in South Gujarat |
Research Type
|
Survey Work |
Experiment Background
|
The original home of papaya is Tropical America and belongs genus Carica of the family 'Caricaceae' and cultivated all over the world. India leads the world in papaya production followed by Brazil and Mexico. Papaya cultivation is carried out throughout the year and gives quick return apart from adopting quickly to diverse soil and climatic conditions. Papayas are one of the healthiest, most delicious fruits of all times. In India, Gujarat has second highest producer of papaya crop after Andhra Pradesh. Papaya is a major fruit crop in South Gujarat. Narmada, Tapi and Bharuch are major pockets producing papaya. The present study is proposed with the objectives of identifying farmers’ motive for selection of papaya crop, its existing marketing channels and constraints faced by the papaya growers in the study area.
Many studies have attempted to estimate the postharvest losses at various stages of marketing of fruit and vegetables (Anon, 1982; Anon, 1985, Atibudhi, 1987; Waheed et al., 1986; Aradya et al. 1990; Madan and Ullasa, 1993; Gauraha, 1997; Srinivas et al., 1997; Sreenivasa Murthy et al., 2002; Sudha et al., 2002) and banana in particular (Gajanana et al., 2002; Sreenivasa Murthy et al., 2003). These studies have not separated the loss component explicitly during handling at different stages of marketing nor have included it as a separate item in the marketing margins, costs and price-spread. The need for an appropriate procedure for loss estimation was highlighted in a study on grapes, as these variations could significantly alter the profit margins and efficiency of marketing (Sreenivasa Murthy et al., 2004). In the present study, the methodology will be used for quantifying the post-harvest losses in both physical and value terms at various stages of marketing has been validated for papaya. The results will be compared with conventional methods of estimation of marketing margins and efficiency. The impact of post-harvest losses on producers’ net share, marketing margins and marketing efficiency due to separating out the marketing loss has also been quantified. |

Objective
|
- To assess postharvest losses (quantitative) of papaya at different stages of supply chain.
- To examine the impact of post-harvest losses on net price, marketing costs, margins and marketing efficiency.
- To find out factors contributing perishability of papaya which causes Post Harvest Loss in supply chain management?
- Suggest methods by which wastage can be reduced for the sustainability of papaya crop.
- To find out association between the independent and dependent variables
