Experiment Background | Crude or refined protein derived from algae, bacteria, mold, or yeast that is used for human or animal consumption is referred to as single-cell protein (SCP). Due to its high protein content, the synthesis and use of microbial biomass as a food source has drawn special attention as an alternative to proteins originating from agriculture. SCP contains lipids, vitamins, and other nutraceutical molecules in addition to proteins. The term "algae as a source of SCP" can refer to either prokaryotic cyanobacteria or small single-cell true algae, both of which grow by using light energy and carbon dioxide (autotrophic growth). Algae are frequently cultivated using methods similar to conventional agriculture, in contrast to other SCP-producing organisms, since depend on large areas and sunlight radiation.
