Experiment Title | In vitro response of Finger millet (Eleusine coracona) cultivars for salt stress tolerance
Research Type | Departmental Research
Experiment Background | In the outlook of global climate change, rising population, and diminishing agricultural land, it is crucial to develop resilient Finger Millet by retaining yield stability. Millets are native of semi-arid tropics, where salinity and drought are most common phenomena. Finger millet (Eleusine coracana L.) is grown worldwide on more than four million ha and is a major food crop for millions of people in tropical and sub-tropical areas (Satish et al., 2015). Finger millet has high nutritional qualities and is superior to other cereals since it is a rich source of seed protein, fiber, minerals such as iron, calcium, phosphorus and amino acids viz., tyrosine, cysteine, methionine and tryptophan (Ceasar and Ignacimuthu, 2008;). However, finger millet is highly affected by abiotic stress compared to other millets and cereals, which reduces its average productivity, and also it is considered as a crop sensitive to salinity as compared to other cereals viz., barley, oats, wheat, and sorghum (Bray et al., 2000). To the best of our knowledge, to date, there are no in-depth studies on the evaluation of salinity tolerance on screening of finger millet growth and regeneration. Therefore we aimed to evaluate response of promising finger millet cultivars in vitro for salt stress.
