Experiment Title Development of forewarning model for mango powdery mildew under South Gujarat
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background Powdery mildew fungi are biotroph and cause damage to a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and field crops. These grow superficially as white or creamy mycelial cover on the host surface with initial slow growth when congenial conditions prevail during the susceptible stage of the host. After initiation, the disease progressed very fast resulting in a devastating form leaving no time for taking preventive measures. Among all prevailing diseases, powdery mildew caused by Oidium mangiferae Berthet is emerging as one of the most common, widespread, and serious disease worldwide, causing significant yield losses. Mango is the only known host of this pathogen which can have a sporadic, but very severe incidence, causing up to 90% crop loss. The most serious losses occur during flowering and growing stages which are infected under cool and dry conditions. In the absence of any forewarning information, growers suffer heavy yield losses. Predictor of disease outbreaks or prediction of disease warns that some diseases may occur at some future time. The prediction of an outbreak of disease, integrated with the biological consideration of the development of disease, enables sprays to be considered in the most effective cases. It can reduce the number of sprays, reduce the cost of cultivation, and the impact of pesticides on the environment. The sequential occurrence of congenial temperature and relative humidity at the particular susceptible growth stage of the plant is known to be conducive for the growth and development of pathogens. Growth models have been used extensively for summarizing and comparing different plant disease epidemics. However, accounts on epidemiological information about the growth modeling of mango powdery mildew have not been dealt with so far in present climatic conditions. Therefore, the current investigation on epidemiological aspects of statistical modeling of mango powdery mildew occurrence can help in advocating the mango growers and decision makers to take preventive measures on time without economic loss by understanding the behavior of the disease.
