Experiment Title Value Chain Management of Mango by FPOs of South Gujarat
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background Agriculture serves as the primary livelihood for the entire population, directly or indirectly dependent on its output. The country's agricultural landscape boasts diversified crop production, positioning it as a leading producer of jute, tea, milk, cereals, pulses, fruits, and vegetables. Despite this abundance, a significant challenge emerges in the form of substantial wastage, particularly of perishable goods, accounting for an estimated 30–40 percent of agricultural produce lost due to inefficiencies in the market and value chain. Recognizing the imperative to mitigate this wastage, attention is turning towards processing agricultural commodities and enhancing the agriculture value chain (AVC). The introduction of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) has emerged as a pivotal strategy to bridge the gap between agriculture commodities and the market. By facilitating the processing of agricultural produce, FPOs contribute to the generation of revenue for farmers. The agricultural sector in South Gujarat, holding a 57 percent share in the total area and 62 percent in mango production in the state, faces substantial losses. Therefore, there is a pressing need to promote the formation of FPOs in South Gujarat to facilitate effective integration into the value chain. This study aims to investigate the role of FPOs in the mango value chain, evaluating their impact on farmers' income. Additionally, the research seeks to throw light on the efficiency of various actors involved in the mango value chain and measure stakeholders' perceptions. By exploring these dimensions, the study aims to provide insights that can inform strategies to enhance the value chain efficiency and sustainability of mango cultivation and marketing in South Gujarat.

Research Methodology

Methodology:

  • Location of Study: South Gujarat will be selected for the study
  • Research Design: Descriptive Research Design
  • Sampling Design: For the present study two FPOs dealing in mango related value chain activities were selected purposively and from each selected FPO’s 75 member farmers and 150 non-member farmers have been selected randomly thus, total 300 farmers were  selected. In addition, different intermediaries have been contacted and 10 from each category are selected.
  • Sampling Size: 150 member farmers, 150 non-member and 10 intermediaries from each category.
  • Data Collection Tools & Techniques: Primary data is being collected by conducting personal interview of farmers and intermediaries using interview schedule as a data collection tool.
  • Statistical Tools for analysing data: The quantitative approach is used for the data analysis.

a. Cost analysis: In order to assess the benefits of the services supported to production activities by the FPOs, the standard cost and return analysis is being used.

b. Value chain mapping: The value chain is sequence of interrelated activities in which each activity adds value to the product or service, a value that motivates the consumer to pay for that product or service (Dicken et al., 2007).

c. Value chain efficiency: The Sum-of-Average Gross margin method has been  used in the estimation of price spread. Profits earned and value added by various market functionaries will be recorded (Saravanakumar and Kiruthika, 2015).
