Experiment Title | Biodiversity of Fusarium spp. infecting major crops of Bharuch district
Research Type | Departmental Research
Experiment Background | Fusarium is a global fungus that can be found in soil from all over the world. Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium udum, is the most serious disease resulting in substantial yield losses. Crop yield losses vary depending on the stage at which it becomes infected, ranging from 100% at pre-pod to 67% at pre-harvest to 30% at maturity (Sharma et al., 2019). Wilt disease caused by Fusarium spp. is a significant factor limiting yield and lowering the quality of edible legumes. Fusarium wilt is the most common soil-borne disease affecting mothbean (Agnihotri et al., 1987). In the pulse crop, yield losses average around 50 per cent. Fusarium wilt or Panama disease is a severe fungal disease of banana plants caused by F. oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Das et al., 2012). Fusarium wilt, caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum, is a major disease of cotton capable of causing significant economic loss (www.tnau.in). Morphological characterization based on the pigmentation, growth rate, microscopically study of the size and shape of the macro and micro conidia are highly depended on the environmental and geographical factors. Moreover, morphological identifications are often complicated, difficult and time consuming and the application of skilled techniques in observing and recognising the diagnostic characteristics of the isolates (Watanabe et al., 2011). However, characterization at the molecular level interprets better result. For the further confirmation of the identification of Fusarium spp. (Das et al., 2012).
