China aster [Callistephus chinensis (L.) Nees] is one of the important commercial annual flower crops which belongs to the family Asteraceae and native to China as well as Europe. The genus Callistephus derived its name from two Greek words ‘kalistos’ and ‘stephos’ meaning ‘most beautiful’ and ‘a crown’, respectively. Its flowers available in attractive colours. Flowers are used for various purposes like keeping in vases, flower decoration, preparation of bouquets, garlands, etc. In addition, their uses in landscape gardening provide mass aesthetic value whereas dwarf cultivars are used for making edges and can be used as pot plant. It can be very well grown in different soil and climatic conditions hence, it is grown successfully under different agroclimatic conditions in open field.
The evaluation of China aster has remarkable variations. The characterization of accessions provides description of the material which is essential for identification, conservation, management and utilization in crop improvement programmes. Morphological characterization is the first step in description and classification. The agro climatic conditions of south Gujarat is very congeal for China aster cultivation and production can be enhanced by adopting suitable varieties for this region. Some varieties of China aster recently developed by ICAR- IIHR, Bangluru under AICRP are provided for testing. Hence, the present experiment is designed to test new genotypes of China aster.
