Experiment Title Preliminary Evaluation Trial in China aster for loose flower and landscaping (2024-25)
Research Type AICRP Research
Experiment Background China aster [Callistephus chinensis (L.) Nees] is an important commercial flower crop which belongs to the family Asteraceae and native to China as well as Europe. The genus Callistephus derived its name from two Greek words ‘kalistos’ and ‘stephos’ meaning ‘most beautiful’ and ‘a crown’, respectively. China aster adopts very well in varying soils and climatic conditions hence, it is grown successfully under different agroclimatic conditions in open field. Its flowers has more shelf life as compared to other loose flowers and are used for various purposes like keeping in vases, flower decoration, preparation of bouquets, garlands, etc. In addition, their uses in landscape gardening provide mass aesthetic value whereas, dwarf cultivars are used for making edges and can be used as pot plant. Various variants in china aster are developed by selection, mutation and hybridization which are maintained out of which some suitable genotypes may be obtained for different ornamental traits therefore evaluation is needed for various purposes and hence, the present experiment is designed.
