Experiment Title | Survey of pests and diseases of honey bees in Gujarat
Research Type | AICRP Trials
Experiment Background | Honey bees are among the most important insects in ecosystems. They are not only important for the honey they produce but also as pollinators of field and horticultural crops. The beekeeping business currently faces many challenges including the changes in agricultural practices, the extensive use of pesticides and the damage due to pests and pathogens. The information on pests and diseases of honey bees is not documented in Gujarat. Honey bee brood and adults are hosts for several microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, protozoa, viruses and parasitic mites that cause serious losses in beehives production and a decline in the bee populations. To control these pathogens and parasites beekeepers often rely on using antibiotics and pesticide treatments. This diminishes the lifetime expectancy of honey bees and causes disequilibria in the normal microbiota of the beehive, increasing the risks of contamination of hive equipment and bee products. Looking to the effect of different pests and diseases on bee health and ultimately on the production of honey, the present investigation is being proposed to know the pests and diseases of honey bees prevailing in Gujarat.
