Experiment code 19.3.3.19
Experiment Title Isolation and identification of microbial diversity from Jeevamrut and their antagonistic effect against soil borne pathogens
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background Background information Liquid organic formulations like Panchagvya, Beejamrut and Jeevamrut are used in natural farming. These are rich sources of beneficial microflora which support, stimulate the plant growth, better vegetative growth and ,also obtaine good quality yield (Devakumar et al.,2014). Devakumar et al. (2008) and Srinivas et al. (2010) have reported the presence of many beneficial microorganisms viz., nitrogen fixers, phosphorus solubilizers, actinomycetes and fungi in Jeevamrut and Beejamrut. Swaminathan (2005) showed that naturally occurring beneficial microorganisms mainly bacteria, yeasts, actinomycetes, photosynthetic bacteria and certain fungi were detected in cow dung which is one of component of Jeevamrut, contain macro as well as micro nutrients, many vitamins, essential amino acids, growth promoting factors like Indole Acetic Acid (IAA), Gibberellic acid (GA) and beneficial microorganisms (Natrajan 2007, Sreenivasa 2010). Maximum colonies of bacteria, fungi, actinomycets, N-fixers and P-solubilizers were present in of beneficial microorganisms in jeevamrut formulation might be mainly due to their constituents such as: cow dung, cow urine, legume flour and jaggery and associated microorganisms and their products (Palekar, 2006; Sreenivasa et al., 2010). jeevamrut was made following serial dilution and plate count technique. Samples were drawn on a daily basis up to 7 days after preparation (DAP) for up to 20 days for Jeevamrut. Samples were studied for five groups of micro organisms’ viz., bacteria & fungi, actinomycets, N-fixers and P-solubilizers. The different fungi observed were: Aspergillus sp., Fusarium sp., Penicillium sp., Trichoderma sp., isolated P-solubilisers fungi like - Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp., Bacteria like- Bacillus sp., Pseudomonas sp., and N-fixers like bacteria - Azatobacter sp., A. chroococcum, Bacillus sp., Beijerinckia sp., Actinomycetes -Streptomyces sp. The presence of beneficial microorganisms in organic liquid formulation might be mainly due to their constituents such as: cow dung, cow urine, legume flour, handful soil from banyans tree and jaggery and associated microorganisms and their products (Palekar, 2006; Sreenivasa et al., 2010). It clearly indicates that the jeevamrut is enriched consortia of native soil microorganisms. The preparation would give the best results if it is used between 9th to 12th days after preparation. Hence, this experiment will be conducted for finding and identify most out effective bioagents from jeevamrut.
