Experiment code 21.5.3.1
Experiment Title Effect of season on phenological and biochemical variation in mango
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is one of the most preferred, widely distributed and broadly grown tropical fruit in the world. It is increasing commercial importance all over the world and assume a leading position in among fruits. Seasonal variations or seasonality are the changes in behavior, biological rhythms, physiology, etc. that occur due to periodic variations in the environment due to the passage of the reasons (Zafar et al., 2023; Rehman et al., 2023). The environmental variables play a key and vital role in induction of mango flowering. Experimental evidence indicates that maturity of terminal shoot and accumulation of carbohydrate in the leaves and shoot apex are in some way associated with the synthesis of the floral stimulus in mango trees. Mango flowering is predominantly influenced by the biochemical constituents present in the phase for the floral stimuli at bud break stage. The state of biochemical constituents primarily determines the synchronization of flower stimuli and earliness of flowering. Therefore, the research was planned to study the effect of seasonal variation on phonological and biochemical changes during growth and flowering of mango.

Methodology

A. The physiological observations and biochemical analysis will be done at monthly interval. For estimation of GA spectrophotometric method, for ABA gas chromatography method, for IAA colorimetric method, for Zeatin paper or thin layer chromatography method, for total carbohydrates Anthrone method will be used.

B. Cutoff date for flowering will be considered as 1st November

C. Heat unit like growing degree days (GDD), Heliothermal unit (HTU) and Photothermal unit (PTU) were computed by using the methodology as described by Nuttonson (1955).
