Experiment Background
Arecanut (Areca catechu L.) is highly economical among the plantation crops grown in humid tropics of India. It is essentially a crop of small and marginal holders cultivated in 0.42 million hectares in India with a production of 0.52 million tons and productivity of 1249 kg ha1,which can further increased by taking intercrops which gives sufficient income to sustain dependent families. So, the emphasis should be to Increase the productivity per unit area. The arecanut palm yields the widely recognized chewing nut, commonly referred to as betel nut or Supari. The coastal region of South Gujarat is also suitable for this crop. Hence, to evaluate performance of arecanut plantation in South Gujarat, an experiment is hereby proposed with the following objectives:
