Experiment code 21.5.3.9
Experiment Title Effect of moisture stress and tillage on flowering and yield of mango
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background The changing rain patterns in South Gujarat have leads to drastic change in the flowering phenology of mango. The span of rain from July to October have increased the ground moisture which impacted the plant reproduction physiology. This heavy rain fall leads to compaction of upper soil crust resulting in retention of below ground moisture level for longer period of time. The continuous availability of moisture delays the reproductive growth of the mango. To induce the early and regular flowering in mango removal of below ground moisture and water stress is of most important factor. Amongst factors, different soil tillage contributes directly and affects the sustainable use of soil resources through its influence on soil moisture. Therefore, judicious use of tillage practices can enhance crop yield as well as overcomes the adaptic constraints. Hence the current experiment is formulated with the following objectives.

Treatment

T1 : No irrigation (Control)

T2 : Disc plough + disc harrow + no irrigation

T3 : Sub-soiling + disc plough + no irrigation

T4 : Sub-soiling + disc plough + irrigation

T5: Deep furrow + disc plough + no irrigation

T6: Deep furrow + disc plough + irrigation

  • In the T1 reaper will be used after monsoon
  • In T2 water stress will be impose through disc plough after cession of monsoon at the vaspa until the flowering by disc harrow
  • In  T3 and T4 sub-soiling (45 cm) will be done before monsoon followed by disc plough after monsoon (No irrigation will apply) treatment
  • In T5 and T6 deep furrow will be used before monsoon followed by disc plough after monsoon at vaspa condition followed by irrigation after 7 to 10 days.

All operations will be done as per the treatments after cession of monsoon. The moisture meter with probes will be inserted initially in to soil in each treatments at the different depth of 30 cm, 60 cm and 90 cm for measurement of soil moisture that will be correlate with the flowering period
