Experiment Title | Evaluation of Biochemical parameters of selected cotton genotypes
Research Type | Lab Research
Experiment Background | India is the second highest cotton producer after china in the world. Cotton has economic value as fiber and cotton seed oil. Cotton seed also contain 20-25% protein. Hence, cotton has become a fibre cum oil yielding crop. However, evaluation criteria for a cotton variety only consider its fibre yield and its oil yield is totally ignored. With three times as much unsaturated as saturated fatty acid, cottonseed oil is considered as a healthy vegetable oil and is one of the few oils advised for reducing saturated fat intake. Day by day consumption of cotton seed oil is increasing in India. It was 13 lakh MT in 2014. Cotton fiber and oil production generate by products, which is rich in protein and used for animal feeding. However, this plant contains a toxic compound, gossypol. Monogastric animals, such as pigs, birds, fish, and rodents, are more susceptible to gossypol toxicity than ruminants. The cotton seeds contain gossypol which reacts with protein through lysine branch and adversely affect quality of cotton seed flour. It is toxic to non-ruminant animal. Constituent of cotton seed was affected by environment and genotypes is well known. To mitigate the present need of oil and protein as feed, a high yielding genotype is essentially rich in cotton seed oil and protein nevertheless also containing low gossypol. The information about fatty acid content, oil, protein and gossypol in cotton seed is scanty there for to explore these characters in cotton genotypes for further breeding programme these experiment was designed.
