Experiment code 17.2.21
Experiment Title Screening of cotton genotype under saline environment
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background India is the second highest cotton producer after china in the world. Cotton has economic value as fiber and cotton seed oil. Cotton seed also contain 20-25% protein. Hence, cotton has become a fibre cum oil yielding crop. Salt-affected soils cover more than 7 % of the earth’s land surface and represent a major limiting factor in crop production (Liu et. al., 2015). Soil salinity is becoming a serious threat to global agriculture. Currently, nearly 20% of the world’s cultivated area and nearly half of the world’s irrigated lands are affected by salinity (Zhang et. al., 2009). It has been estimated that an approximate area of 7 million hectares of land is covered by saline soil in India. In the costal district of the Gujarat state salinity of agricultural land is constantly on increasing trend. (Shrivastava and Kumar, 2015). About 6.73 Mha of land is salt affected in India of which 2.22 Mha is present in Gujarat state only (Gurung and Aza, 2013). Development of salt-tolerant crops has been a major objective of plant breeding programs for decades in order to maintain crop productivity in semiarid and saline lands. Hence, In viewing this, experiment is formulated to find out best genotype for saline environment from the interspecific germplasm.
