Experiment Title Studies on changes in soil properties under anaerobic rice cultivation in coastal areas of South Gujarat

Experiment Background Rice is one major staple food crop of India. In Gujarat about 25.41 lakh area is under rice cultivation. The crop is mainly grown in kharif (2.57 lakh ha) and in summer (0.06 lakh ha) seasons in Navsari, Valsad, Surat, Bharuch and Tapi districts of South Gujarat due to well developed canal irrigation network. The nutrient availability and changes in soil properties due to submergence forms a key factor in growth and production of rice. Practices followed by farmers’ under submerged rice cultivation are bound to change in soil nutrient availability status in soil with time. Since this type of information is lacking, the study has been proposed.

Criteria for the selection of  transplanted rice on farmers’ field

            Soil samples will be collected at 0-15 cm, 15-30 cm, 30-60 and 60-90 cm at different intervals viz., 0, 15, 25, 50, 75 and 100 DAT and after harvest of crop. Soil pH, EC and Eh (oxidation-reduction potential) will be measured at field level. For comparison of nutrient dynamics under submerged field conditions, soil samples will also be collected from some adjoining fields representing the area which are not cultivated under submerged rice. Analysis of irrigation water samples and other parameters for soil samples will be done at laboratory level.

Standard questionnaire of the practices followed by the farmers related to rice cultivation will be collected depending upon the following situations

  • Period (no. of years) under transplanted rice cultivation and

Cropping season (only kharif and kharif + summer)
