Effect of irrigation schedule on the performance of various late sown wheat cultivars under south Gujarat

Experiment Background
Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is the most important cereal crop used as a staple food in India. In India, wheat is grown on 31.45 million hectares and total wheat production is 107.18 million tonnes, with an average yield of 3407 kg/ha (GOI, 2019-20). In Gujarat, wheat is cultivated on 1273.78 thousand ha with production of 404745 thousand tonnes with average productivity of 3.26 t/ha (DOA, Gujarat, 2020 -21). Despite higher yield potential, average grain yield of wheat in Gujarat is much less than most of the wheat growing states of the India. Wheat is produced under irrigated conditions in the country; but low rainfall and late heat stress conditions are the constraints to achieve the desired results. Wajid et al. (2002) reported that wheat crop produced highest grain yield by applying irrigation at all definable growth stages. Because irrigation is an effective input, that’s why we need to know the response of yield to irrigation. Grain yield of different wheat cultivars were significantly reduced by water stress at all critical growth stages and greatest reduction was at anthesis stage. Yield and yield components were significantly increased within different wheat cultivars. Planting of wheat in the irrigated area of south Gujarat commences in November and continues as late as 31st December. Most of the crop is harvested in March - April. During this span, the normal growth and development of wheat primarily depends upon available irrigation water. Normally, main growing areas of wheat are i.e. Bardoli and Mangrol (Surat district). Therefore, present studies were undertaken to examine the yield response of wheat cultivars to variable irrigation water regimes under two locations of South Gujarat.
