Experiment Title Estimation of tree biomass and carbon sequestration potential of Selected Tree Species of South Gujarat
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background Tree is one of the important components in mitigation of climate change and it serves as a substantial warehouse of carbon. Tree stores/sequesters carbon, which is remains in the wood after it is processed into a product like furniture and building materials, etc. The role of trees in temporal carbon dynamics is characterized by long periods of gradual build-up of biomass (a sink), alternating with short periods of massive biomass loss. Biomass of trees depends upon the growth pattern, environmental and genetic factors, cultivation practices, etc. Estimation of biomass is an essential to work out the carbon sequestration potential of tree species. Generation of data base would be helpful in understanding/ working out the biomass and carbon sequestration potential of tree species. Government of Gujarat has sanctioned a project to the Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari, Gujarat for determining carbon sequestration potential of important forest tree species of South Gujarat. In the first phase, twelve major forest species such as Saru, Arjun Sadad, Kalam, Safed siris, Sag, Limdo, Nilgiri, Subaval, Biyo, Haldu along with Mango and Sapota were used and estimated their tree biomass and carbon sequestration potential. Such work is also in progress for other forest tree species. In this proposal, some more selected tree species, which are grown in different land-use systems like plantation, avenue/roadside, agroforestry, etc. will be considered for estimating the volume, biomass and carbon sequestration potential of standing trees.
