Experiment Title Exploring actinomycetes for their cellulolytic and lignolytic activity

Experiment Background Increasing interest in the exploitation of plant biomass as a renewable resource has provided an impetus for research on microbial degradation of lignocelluloses. Actinomycetes form an important part of the microbial community responsible for nutrient recycling in natural substrates. Their specific contribution to lignocellulose degradation in the environment has received only limited attention but their importance can be inferred from the ubiquity and diversity of species in which activity against lignocellulose has been demonstrated. Moreover, during decomposition/degradation of organic waste, there is microbial succession. Actinomycetes are very significant in the degradation of cellulose, lignin and other resistant materials. They form colonies normally on the outer surface and are active during the later stages of composting. Actinomycetes usually attack these materials after the readily decomposed materials have been depleted. Thus, they are responsible for complete degradation of orgnic waste. Hence, present study aims to isolate cellulase and lignin modifying enzyme producing actinomycetes.
