Study of critical crop-weed competition in summer pearl millet (Penneisetum glaucum L.)
Research Type
Departmental Research
Experiment Background
Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) is one of the important cereal crops globally after rice, wheat and maize. It is a unique crop among the major cereals and the staple food and fodder crop of the world’s poor and most food insecure populations in the arid and semi-arid tropics. In India, the area and production of pearl millet during 2017-18 was 74.80 lakh hectares and 92.08 lakh tonnes, respectively with productivity of 1231 kg/ha. In Gujarat, it is cultivated over an area of 3.97 lakh hectares with a production and productivity of 9.64 lakh tonnes and 2430 kg/ha, respectively (GOI 2017-18). Weeds are major obstacle in increasing the productivity of pearl millet. Sharma and Jain (2003) reported up to 40% loss in grain yield due to weed competition in pearl millet. Therefore, effective weed control at the early growth stage of the crop is one of the most important factors contributing to high yield. So the present experiment is proposed to study of critical crop-weed competition in pearl millet.
