Experiment Title
|
Assessment of performance and constraints of nursery produced mango grafts at farmers field |
Research Type
|
Departmental Research |
Experiment Background
|
The result of our previous project ―Economic assessment of private horticulture
nurseries in Navsari District of Gujarat‖ shows that the nursery in the study area mainly
produces floriculture/ ornamental seedlings for the urban population and fruit seedlings for
the farmers. The fruit seedling is the vital input in the perennial crops. In the perennial fruit
segment, the major share of seedlings is found to be that of mango. In this background, the
present study is proposed to access the feasibility of the Mango seedling produced by the
nurseries at farmers field. The study will be helpful to understand the overall performance of
the nurseries as a whole and will be helpful in highlighting the lacuna (if any) between the
nurseries and the growers |

Research Methodology

Sampling Design: The Navsari district of South Gujarat will be selected for the
present study as the study is precursor of our initial study on Nurseries in Navsari.
The Navsari district was selected as it has major institutional support for the
technicality of conducive growth of the nurseries in the region. The multistage
sampling technique will be employed for selection of growers. At first stage Navsari
district will be purposively selected. The Second stage will be for selection of 2 taluka
namely, Navsari, Gandevi and Vansda. The two talukas are selected as it was found
that these talukas are the hub of producing mango seedlings. At last stage 50
mango growers from each taluka will be selected randomly in consultation with the
personals of the Government officers working in the region. Thus, the study will be
based on the 100 mango growers. In order to compare performance of seedlings
purchased from private and public nurseries, the growers will be selected from both
categories i.e., private and public nurseries
The mango plant starts fruiting from 4 years onwards but it is generally suggested to
start taking production from 7 years onward for good and healthy vegetative growth
of the plant. Thus, in this study we will collect the data from orchard not more than 8
years. The sample will also be sub categorised to collect data from grower‘s orchard |
74
of initial to 4 year old and more than 4 year to 8 year old plantation.
Sampling frame and Procedure for selection of respondents: the study will be
based on the 100 mango growers as explained in previous section.
Data Collection Tools &Techniques: The information will be gathered through
primary sources (questionnaire survey, personal observations and interviews). A
structured questionnaire administered to the growers which contained questions on
the demographic characteristics, the capital used in plantation, seedling purchased,
mortality of seedling, government aids in setting up of orchard, problem faced and
their weekly, monthly and yearly expenditure and their expected return will be
obtained through this questionnaire. Also, secondary data will be collected on the
cost of production of seedlings and the income generated within the past five years.
Statistical Tools for analyzing data: Simple statical tools viz. mean, percentage will be
used for accessing the data
The second objective of accessing constraints will be accomplished by Garrett‘s
Ranking technique. |
