Experiment code 15.4.3.63
Experiment Title Tree selection, evaluation and clonal propagation of Ardu (Ailanthus excelsa Roxb.) germpalsm
Research Type Departmental Research
Experiment Background Ardu (Ailanthus excelsa Roxb.) is spread in the arid and semi-arid regions and also grows successfully even in the region where minimum average annual rainfall is about 400 mm. Ardu is not only grown as homestead agroforestry on field boundaries as shelterbelts but also grown as a shade and avenue tree in most of the semi-arid areas of Rajasthan and Gujarat to supply the green leaf fodder, fuel wood and timber. Ardu provides nutritious green fodder during the lean period to the small ruminants. Ardu leaves are best among all the fodder trees from palatability and nutritive value (19% protein). The green leaves contains 19.87% crude protein, 12.72% crude fibre, 3.53% ether extract, 11.97% total ash, 2.11% calcium and 0.24% phosphorus. It is extensively used for match splints, packing cases, fishing catamarans and floats and for commercial plywood.Thus, present study is targeted to identify the best germplasm for their growth and yield in the region.

Design of Experiment
  1. Design for clone selection: Random selection of tree
  2. For nursery & field: RB

Part A: Germplasm evaluation (Note: pre-existing trial of minimum 10 CPTs established during 2016-17 at NRM Farm, NAU, Navsari will be used for undertaking the proposed experiment)

Experiment details:

Selection of superior CPTs based on growth performance in the existing plantation (Families =10 and each family represented by 8 trees and planting space was 6x3 m) will be used for selecting clone by following standard procedure.

Part B: Clonal multiplication of selected CPTs

Selected CPTs will be used for clonal propagation and progeny evaluation. Replications : 3 (Each replication contains three clones) and progeny trial will be established in RBD

Propagation method: Branch cuttings and/or root sucker  will be followed for clonal propagation and treatment details are given below:

T1= Distilled water

T2= IBA @1000 ppm

T3= IBA @2000 ppm

T4= IBA @3000 ppm

T5= IBA @4000 ppm

Part C: Progeny evaluation

Clones of selected CPTs will be used for progeny evaluation. RBD will be used following minimum of 10 clones and three replications and each replication containing 3 ramets.
