Experiment Background
|
India is an agrarian economy with 55 per cent rural households still dependent on agriculture directly or indirectly for their livelihood. But the Indian agriculture sector at present is facing the major challenge that is diminishing size of land holding. As per the 2015 census, the proportion of small and marginal farmers is more than 85 per cent of total land holdings in the agricultural economy of India. Being smallholders, these farmers suffer from some inherent problems such as absence of economies of scale, access to information and their inability to participate in the price discovery mechanism. So, to overcome the existing challenges new model of aggregation in the form of Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) has evolved which enables incorporation of primary farm producers into such an institution which would be controlled by farmers themselves. Farmer Producer Organization members are able to leverage collective strength and bargaining power to access financial and non-financial inputs and services and appropriate technologies leading to reduction in transaction costs. Members can also collectively tap high value markets and enter into partnerships with private entities on equitable terms. In this regard, the present study attempts to find out the factors influencing member farmers to join Farmer Producer Organization and attitude of member farmers towards services provided by farmer producer organization. Also, the study will throw light on the constraints perceived by member farmers towards functioning of farmer producer organizations in the study area. |

Research Methodology
|
Location of Study: South Gujarat will be selected for the study.
Research Design: Descriptive Research Design
Sampling Design: Multistage stratified random sampling technique will be employed to select the member farmers of Farmer Producer Organization (FPO). According to Small Farmers‘ Agri-Business Consortium database Gujarat has 39 FPOs and out of that 14 FPO‘s are there in South Gujarat. So for the present study 7 FPO‘s will be selected and from each selected FPO‘s 50 marginal and small member farmers will be selected randomly. Thus, total 350 marginal and small member farmers will be selected.
Sampling Size: 350 marginal and small member farmers of Farmer Producer Organizations.
Data Collection Tools & Techniques: Primary data will be collected by conducting personal interview of farmers using interview schedule as a data collection tool.
Statistical Tools for analyzing data: The quantitative approach will be used for the data analysis. Simple Statistical tools and tabular analysis will be done for the fulfillment of the objectives.
