Experiment code 18.5.3.18
Experiment Title Study of micro irrigation management and spacing under off- season planted banana in relation to cover crop
Research Type AICRP Research
Experiment Background In order to meet the year round demand of local and export market as well as processing unit of banana, farmers have started banana planting during off-season i.e. April- May. In off–season planted banana, Collar-rot is a major problem due to high temperature at primary growth stage of crop. So, productivity of off-season planted banana is less than normal season crop. There is need to moderate the microclimate and standardization spacing under off-season planted banana through cover crop as well as modifying irrigation management system. This will not only enhance the productivity of banana but also increasing water use efficiency as well as net profit. Hence, present study is proposed.

Treatment
  1. Irrigation Management for cover crop (I)

I0=Without cover crop

I1=Rainy sprinkler irrigation at 3 day interval (30mm)

I2=Rainy sprinkler irrigation at 5 day interval (30mm)

I3=Rainy sprinkler irrigation at 7 day interval (30mm)

I4=Surface irrigation at weekly interval (ID=60mm)

I5= Surface irrigation at 10 day  interval (ID=60mm)

  1. Spacing of Banana (S)

S1=2.4 x 1.2 m2

S2= 2.0 x 1.2 m2

Note: 1) Banana will be planting in third week of April while cover crop (Sunhemp) will be sown before 10 day of banana planting.

         2) Cover crop will be incorporate in soil after two months.

         3) Banana will be irrigated at recommended irrigation schedule (0.6 PEF) through drip as per requirement during monsoon and after cession of monsoon on alternate day.
