Experiment Title Status of sugarcane pyrilla and its natural enemies fauna in sugarcane ecosystem
Research Type Survey Work
Experiment Background Sugarcane, Saccharum officinarum L. is an important agro-industrial cash crop in India. The major constraints in yield reduction are insect pest and diseases. Among the insect pest, more than 80 insect pest infesting sugarcane crop plays major role in reducing the yield of sugarcane. Sugarcane pyrilla, Pyrilla perpusilla (Walk) (Hemiptera: Lophopidae) is one of the most serious pest widely distributed in cane growing areas. The damage caused by P. perpusilla has been reported up to 28 per cent in the potential cane yield and 2-34 per cent in sucrose content of sugarcane. The sugarcane pyrilla is being attacked by more than dozen species of natural enemies and playing an important role in the regulation of pest population which can be exploited to the maximum possible extent in the management of pyrilla. The present investigation was carried out to know the population dynamics of pyrilla and its natural enemies fauna under south Gujarat condition. This study would help to design Bio-intensive Integrated Pest Management (BIPM) strategies for pyrilla under Gujarat condition.

Methodology of experiment:

Pyrilla:

Egg mass, nymph and adult of P. perpusilla were recorded from three leaves i.e. top, middle and lower leaves on 20 randomly selected canes from each location. Average population of egg mass, nymph and adults per leaf was recorded.

Natural enemies:

To know the parasitization (egg/nymphal/adult) of sugarcane pyrilla under field conditions, available stage(s) of sugarcane pyrilla along with substrate were collected and brought to Biocontrol laboratory for the further assessment of parasitization. The emerged parasitoids were collected separately to avoid assimilation of species. The date, place and stage of the host insect were also recorded. The collected parasitoids were sent for further identification and confirmation up to species level. Thus, per cent parasitization was worked out.

To know the predator population of sugarcane pyrilla under field conditions, available stages of predator on sugarcane pyrilla were recorded on per plant basis. The collected stages were brought to Biocontrol laboratory for the further assessment of hyper-parasitization. The emerged hyper-parasitoid were collected separately and sent for further identification and confirmation up to species level. Thus, predator population per plant was worked out.

To know the infection by the entomopathogenic fungi under field condition; the infected stages were collected under natural condition and transferred into sterile vial. The same vials were brought to Biocontrol laboratory for the further assessment of infection. The isolation and identification of the entomopathogenic fungi was made during present investigation. The photographic catalogue of target pest and available natural enemies fauna to be prepared. The data on status of pyrilla and its natural enemy fauna to be correlated with prevailing weather parameters. The ancillary observations viz., variety/genotype, field condition, crop condition were also recorded.
