Experiment Title | Multilocation survey on natural enemies of Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith)
Research Type | Survey Work
Experiment Background | The Fall Armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is an invasive pest of maize. In 2018, this notorious pest has been reported in India and the same pest is also reported in Gujarat state. The natural enemies of invasive pests are not found at the time of introduction in a particular region. For the biological control of invasive pest, natural enemies are introduced from origin of invasive pest. There are great possibilities of association of native bioagents with invasive pest. This association need to explore for the biocontrol programme of invasive pest. It is assumed that natural enemies plays vital role in IPM programme and it leads sustainable pest management. The parasitoids of FAW in the families, Platygastridae, Trichogrammatidae, Braconidae, Ichneumonidae (order Hymenoptera) and Tachinidae (order Diptera) and entomopathogenic fungus Nomuraea rileyi (Farl.) have been reported against FAW in Karnataka, India (Shylesha, et. al, 2018). However, the fauna of natural enemies of FAW in south Gujarat have not been studied in detail so far. Apart from the above, department of Entomology has regular survey work of insect pest and disease in major crop viz., sugarcane, paddy and mango cropping ecosystems under the development charges (scheme) entitled “Scheme on forecasting weather, pest and disease at Navsari” (B.H.12939) in Navsari, Surat and Valsad districts of south Gujarat. Therefore, in addition to the objectives of above said scheme, we have arranged the survey work pertaining to natural enemies of FAW under south Gujarat conditions.

Methodology of experiment: To know the parasitization (egg/larval/pupal/adult) of fall armyworm under field conditions, available stage(s) of FAW along with substrate were collected and brought to laboratory for the further assessment of parasitization. The emerged parasitoids were collected separately to avoid assimilation of species. The date, place and stage of the host insect were also recorded. To know the predator population of FAW under field conditions, available stages of predator on FAW were recorded on per plant basis. The collected specimens were brought to laboratory for the further assessment of hyper-parasitization. To know the infection by the entomopathogenic microorganisms under field conditions; the infected stageswere collected under natural condition and transferred into sterile vial. The same vials were brought to laboratory for the further assessment of infection. The isolation and identification of the entomopathogenic microorganisms were made during present investigation. The collected natural enemies of FAW preserved for further studies. The taxonomic study of collected specimens was studied under the stereo-binocular microscope. The unidentified specimens were sent to respective taxonomist for identification. The photographic catalogue of available natural enemies to be prepared on fauna of FAW during the present investigation. |
